Discipleship is our growth in Christlikeness - an individual and communal journey in the way of Jesus. At UBC, we pursue discipleship in many ways.

LIFE Groups (Living In Faith Everyday)

LIFE Groups are our primary and more-emphasized discipleship avenue. These are weekly sermon-based small groups that can at various times during the week. Most of our groups meet virtually on Zoom, though some of our groups meet in person regularly or occasionally for special gatherings. The purpose of LIFE Groups are to provide a comfortable environment where we can spend time in fellowship with a group of friends, studying God’s Word, and talking about how Christ has been at work in our lives.

Our curriculum focuses on unpacking themes from the previous Sunday’s sermon, looking more in-depth at scriptural texts, and applying lessons to our lives. LIFE Groups also emphasize time for sharing what has been going on in our lives, building authentic community through honesty and transparency.

LIFE Groups meet for 3 cycles during the year - Fall, Winter, and Spring, with breaks around holidays and over the summer.

In-Depth Bible Studies

Our Bible Studies at UBC are open to anyone, and are geared toward a more in-depth exploration of the Biblical texts. Not only do we explore the context and ways to understand these scriptures, we also focus on real-life application of the wisdom that they offer.

We currently have two Bible Studies that meet from the fall through the spring:

  • “Life and Lectionary” - Saturdays at 9:15 a.m. - Led by Pastor Isaac Mwase and Vincent Lui
This class uses the texts of the Revised Common Lectionary as a guide for discussion. By looking at the arrangement of the texts and their interrelatedness, these discussions offer and framework for understanding sections of the Bible as a whole.

  • “Tapestry” - Mondays at 12:00 p.m. - Led by Pastor Tom Harrington and Pastor Josh Raskin
The name “Tapestry” describes the narrative thread that we can see all throughout scripture. This is a verse-by-verse study of one book of the Bible, exploring not just what a specific passage means, but also how it related to the bigger story of God’s redemptive work in scripture and throughout history.

Special Seminars

Throughout the year, we will offer special focused seminars on topics that relate to our faith, spiritual practice, and the world at large. These seminars are large-group gatherings that go deep into a specific topic, and they encourage growth through conversation, reflection, and practice. Usually, our seminars are offered in the “off-season” between LIFE Group cycles, but they vary with the calendar.

Some of the seminars we have offered in the past have included topics such as:

  • A Theology and Spirituality of Work

  • How to Be a Christian as You Read the News

  • The Rise of Christian Nationalism

  • Faith and the Eneagram

  • Social Media and Evangelism

  • and much more!

We are always excited to see what is coming next in our church-wide seminars!

These are just a few promotions out of the many past seminars that have been held at UBC!
