Getting Involved

The people of UBC are involved in many ways and various levels. First, because of our location in Charles Village and across the street from Johns Hopkins University, many people from all over the world and the United States come for a brief visit to one of our worship services.

Second, many who are studying and working in the Baltimore area choose to attend our worship services on a more regular basis. A number of these also participate in one of our regular Bible Studies and may also serve on one of our ministry teams.

Finally, we have others who have desired to be more involved in University Church and participate in ministry service and church leadership, so they have become members of the congregation.

Becoming a Member

As a church in the Baptist tradition, UBC is an autonomous, congregationally-governed church. In other words, the members of UBC themselves govern the church through a democratic process and an established Church Constitution and By-Laws.

According to Article I of the By-Laws of University Baptist Church, “The membership of this Church shall consist of such persons as confess Jesus Christ to be their Savior and Lord, and who have been properly elected to membership.” The By-Laws also state that “members enter the membership by vote of the Church in one of the following ways:
a. by baptism by immersion;
b. by letter from another Baptist church of like faith and order;
c. by statement of Christian faith of a baptized believer;
d. by statement of Christian faith from another Christian Church.”

Any person who is interested in becoming a church member may present him or herself at the end of any regular worship service to the minister during the time of commitment, or they may choose to attend one of the church’s regular Church Interest Seminars, which covers basic Christian beliefs, how to become a Christian, and the particular beliefs and practices of University Baptist Church.
